Yes, Australia offers 2 types of unlimited data mobile plans: Regular plans with unlimited data and endless data plans with no excess data charges.
The first type is self-explanatory – you get no limit to how much data you use on your phone plan each month.
Endless data plans work differently. While there is technically no limit to how much data you can use on these plans, there's a caveat. You're allocated a monthly data allowance that works as normal, but once you go over this, your download speed will slow down.
1. Use your plan as normal
2. Switch to "endless" data when you reach your monthly data cap
3. Your mobile speed will slow down to between 1Mbps and 10Mbps
4. Plan resets at the end of the monthLet's assume you're purchasing a plan that comes with a 40GB monthly allowance and endless mobile data. Here's how it would work:
- You use your mobile plan as you normally would, without having to worry about getting charged for excess data since your plan is "endless".
- Once you've used up your monthly allowance (in this case, 40GB), you'll automatically be switched over to your "endless data". This will come with a speed restriction of 1–10Mbps depending on your plan.
- Keep using your phone and mobile internet as you normally would. You won't get charged extra, but you might notice your speed is slower than usual.
- At the start of the following month, your plan will reset and the steps above will come full circle once again.
There is currently only 1 mobile plan in Australia that offers truly unlimited data: felix's $35 mobile subscription. Keep in mind that while this plan lets you use as much data as you want, it comes with a speed cap of 20Mbps.
Besides this plan, there are other mobile plans in Australia that offer endless data. This means the plan comes with no excess data charges after you surpass your monthly data allowance.
You can get endless data plans from the following providers:
- Telstra
- Optus
- Vodafone
- Belong
- Dodo
While there are no excess data charges on unlimited data mobile plans, some come with speed caps that come into play when you hit your monthly data allowance.
For example, Telstra's Upfront Basic plan comes with 40GB of monthly data. Once you use up 40GB, you can still use your plan with no excess fees charged, but your mobile internet speed will reduce to just 1.5Mbps. This is enough to do basic browsing, but HD streaming or video calls may be a bit difficult.
Here are the capped speeds for unlimited data mobile plans in Australia:
Plans | Unlimited full-speed data | Unlimited data capped speed |
---|
Telstra Upfront plans | ❌ | 1.5Mbps |
Optus Plus plans | ❌ | 1.5Mbps |
Vodafone SIM only plans | ❌ | 2Mbps |
Vodafone prepaid plans | ❌ | 1.5Mbps |
felix mobile subscription | ✅ | 20Mbps |
Belong plans | ❌ | 1 Mbps |
Dodo plans | ❌ | 1 Mbps |
There are 2 options for the cheapest unlimited data mobile plan, both with speed caps:
- Cheapest unlimited plan with capped speeds: felix Mobile $35 subscription
- Cheapest endless data plan: Dodo $10 SIM
While felix comes with unlimited data every month, your speeds will always be capped at 20Mbps. This isn't super slow, but it's less than half the average download speed from Vodafone itself (47.8Mbps for 3G, 4G and 5G users), according to OpenSignal's Mobile Network Experience Report from April 2023.
Dodo's $10 plan comes with just 2GB a month. Once you use up your data allowance, your speed is capped at 1Mbps. Since this is a pretty small amount of data, most users may prefer Belong's 20GB SIM for $25, which also comes with speed shaping to 1Mbps once you hit your monthly 20GB limit.
At the moment there are 6 providers offering unlimited mobile data in Australia.
Telstra unlimited data plans
Telstra has Australia's largest network which reaches 99.5% of the population.
With Telstra's Upfront mobile plans, you get:
- 4G/5G at full speed (except its Basic plan which is capped at 250Mbps), slowed to 1.5Mbps when you use up your monthly data allowance
- Data sharing with up to 10 services on 1 account
- Bonus 3 months Telstra device security and Apple TV+, 2 months BINGE and 1 month Foxtel Now
Optus unlimited data plans
Optus's network covers 98.5% of Australians and its Plus plans come with tons of inclusions:
- 4G/5G at full speed, slowed to 1.5Mbps when you use up your data allowance
- Data sharing across eligible plans on the 1 account
- Discounted Optus Sport from $6.99 a month, up to 10% off eligible subscriptions via Optus SubHub and international roaming from $5 a day
Vodafone unlimited data plans
Vodafone used to offer truly unlimited data on its Ultra+ plan but this was scrapped at the end of January 2023.
It now offers 3 SIM only plans that come with endless data, so you won't get charged any excess usage fees. With Vodafone, you get:
- 4G/5G at full speed, slowed to 2Mbps when you finish your monthly data allowance
- Data sharing with up to 10 services on the 1 account
- International roaming in 102 countries from $5 a day
felix unlimited data mobile plan
felix is the only other provider that offers a truly unlimited data plan. However, its plan speeds are always capped at 20Mbps.
A felix mobile plan includes:
- Access to the 4G Vodafone network
- Carbon neutrality
- 1 tree planted monthly for every active subscription
Belong unlimited data mobile plans
Belong is a green provider offering unlimited data from just $25 a month.
On a Belong mobile plan you get:
- 4G/5G speeds capped at 100Mbps on most plans, slowed down to 1Mbps when you use up your data allowance
- Access to the wholesale 4G/5G Telstra network
- Data banking and gifting
Dodo unlimited data mobile plans
Dodo is the latest mobile provider in Australia to launch endless data on its plans. It is currently the only smaller provider on the Optus network to offer this.
With Dodo, you get:
- Data banking up to 500GB on most plans
- Up to $300 of international call credit
- The same 3G/4G coverage on its mobile plans as you would joining Optus itself
It depends on whether you use up all of your data allowance. The 2022 ACCC Communications market report found that while the median data allowance available was 32 GB a month, the average mobile consumer used only 10.2GB a month. It's likely you're actually using less mobile data than you think.
