How do I find the best energy provider for my household?

There are 4 key things to consider when comparing energy providers in New South Wales.

Find a better price. Look out for the cheapest energy plans available in your area. You can use Finder's comparison engine to help you out. Keep your most recent bill handy as well. Just make sure you're getting the right offer for your usage.
Keep an eagle eye out for reference price/discounts when comparing. The government introduced the reference price back in 2019 to help customers compare energy plans. For example, providers will sometimes showcase a plan by stating it's "8% less than the reference price" or that you will receive an "8% discount". Don't settle for plans that are above the reference price.
Default market offer (DMO) vs market offer. Historically, the market offers displayed on most providers' websites have been lower than the DMO, also known as standing offer. However, we're in unprecedented times and this may not always be the case. Remember that while providers may not always display DMOs on their website, you can call them and request to get on one.
Watch out for extra costs. These can include late fees, credit card fees, disconnection and reconnection costs and can sometimes vary between providers.

Good to know: It's easy to switch to a new provider either online or over the phone. The new provider will handle everything for you, including letting your current provider know. After you sign up, you have a cooling-off period of 10 business days. Contact your energy company within this timeframe if you want to end your contract for any reason.

Greenest energy providers in NSW

The top 3 greenest energy providers in NSW according to the latest Green Electricity Guide are the following:

Sometimes it may not be feasible for households to sign up to a green energy retailer, whether it's due to pricing concerns or availability.
As an alternative, you could sign up with an energy provider that offers 100% carbon neutral plans or the option to add on GreenPower for a small additional cost.
Adding on GreenPower means your provider will need to send renewable energy back to the grid on your behalf.
You can choose to add 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% GreenPower to your energy plan.

Do I qualify for any energy rebates and concessions in NSW?

There are a few rebates and concessions offered by the NSW government that could ease your energy bill woes.

Good to know. The rebate amount will vary if you're a retailer or an "on supply" customer. On supply means you receive a gas (liquefied petroleum or natural gas) bill or invoice issued by or on behalf of the owners or management of your residential community, retirement village or strata scheme.

Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA)
Eligible customers can receive payment assistance of up to $400 per application for electricity and up to $400 per application for gas bills twice a year.

- You need to have an NSW residential address and be the electricity or natural gas account holder.
- You must be experiencing a short-term financial crisis or an emergency.
- Up to $1,600 per household. That's $400 per application for electricity and up to $400 per application for gas billed twice a year.
- You can apply online for the EAPA program.

Low Income Household Rebate (LIHR)
The LIHR provides discounts to pensioners, seniors, veterans or households that struggle to pay their energy bill.

- You must be a NSW resident with an eligible concession card.
- You'll receive the rebate as a credit on your quarterly energy bill. It's up to $285 per year if you are a retail customer.
- A lump sum payment of $313.50 will be deposited into your bank account if your energy is supplied.
- Retail customers will need to contact their energy providers directly. On supply customers should apply online.

NSW Gas Rebate
If you use natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for necessities such as cooking, heating or hot water, you may be eligible to claim a rebate towards your gas bill.

- The gas rebate provides annual discounts to eligible pensioners, veterans and low-income natural gas and LPG customers.
- Commonwealth Seniors Health Card holders are not eligible for this rebate.
- You also need to be a NSW resident and either have your name on the gas bill or be purchasing LPG in cylinder sizes of 45kg or more to use for cooking, heating or hot water.
- Proof of purchase is required.
- Retail customers will receive the rebate as a credit on each quarterly gas bill. The credit is up to a total of $110 per year.
- On supply customers will receive a lump sum payment of $121 deposited into their bank account.
- Contact your current energy provider and provide your concession card or Health Care Card details.
- If you receive electricity from a supplied provider, you'll need to apply through the NSW energy department.

Family Energy Rebate
The Family Energy Rebate helps households who have dependent children and receive the Family Tax Benefit (FTB) payment.

- You must be a NSW resident whose name is on the household energy bill.
- You should have also received an FTB in the previous financial year.
- Eligible energy account holders will receive a credit on an energy bill of up to $180.
- You can apply online if you're eligible and have finalised your tax return for the previous year.
- In some situations, you might need to submit a paper application form through the mail instead.
- The FTB is for parents or carers with a dependent child or secondary student under the age of 20.
- To qualify, the child or student must not be receiving any benefits such as Youth Allowance of their own.
- You must also be providing care for the child at least 35% of the time and meet income requirements.
- Keep in mind. You need to claim the FTB before you can get the Family Energy Rebate.

Seniors Energy Rebate
This rebate is for independent self-funded retirees to help cover the cost of their electricity. Gas accounts are not included.

- Only those with a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card can apply.
- You must also be the primary account holder named on the electricity bill.
- The rebate is $200 per household, per financial year.
- You can apply online for the Seniors Energy Rebate.
- If successful, the amount will be paid directly into your nominated bank or credit union account.

Medical Energy Rebate
The Medical Energy Rebate is available to those with an inability to self-regulate body temperature when exposed to extreme hot or cold environmental temperatures.

- You will need to be assessed by a medical practitioner and be under treatment for at least 3 months.
- The application also requires you to have an eligible concession card and meet at least 1 primary and 1 secondary qualifying condition.
- Commonwealth Seniors Health Card holders are not eligible.
- Approximately $71 credit on each quarterly energy bill, up to a total of $285 a year.
- You will need to download and fill out a form, ask your medical practitioner to fill out relevant sections and sign it.
- The form will need to be submitted to your energy provider directly.

Life Support Rebate
The Life Support Rebate is available to those that require approved energy-intensive equipment at home or have someone living with them that requires it.

- You are a NSW resident and the energy bill account is under your name or someone living with you.
- You've been assessed by a registered medical practitioner.
- The equipment must be essential for supporting life, such as home dialysis, ventilators and oxygen concentrators.
- The rebate amount will depend on the machine(s) and the number of days in the billing period.
- It will be credited to your account each quarter
- You will need to fill out a form, and ask your medical practitioner to complete their section and sign a declaration.
- Retail customers should send the form directly to their energy retailer.
- On supply customers can apply online

NSW residents will likely be on 1 of 2 electricity contracts:
- Standard retail contract. You're likely on this type of contract if you haven't changed retailers or never contacted them to update your energy contract. This is usually equivalent to the default market offer set by the state or territory government.
- Market retail contract. These do not come with any set terms and conditions and are likely cheaper. This is due to additional discounts and other benefits given to a customer for a certain period. Always read the terms and conditions before signing up as your rates can change depending on the plan you're signing up to under this agreement.
Time of use pricing determines what you get charged for using energy at certain times. They may differ depending on which network you're on and which provider you're with. The peak and off-peak times in NSW on the Ausgrid network are divided into summer and winter periods:
Summer time of use periods (1 November to 31 March)
Peak 2pm–8pm weekdays
Shoulder 7am–2pm, 8pm–10pm weekdays and 7am–10pm weekends
Off-peak 10pm–7am weekdays and weekends
Winer time of use periods (1 June to 31 August)
Peak 5pm–9pm weekdays
Shoulder 7am–5pm, 9pm–10pm weekdays and 7am–10pm weekends
Off-peak 10pm–7am weekdays and weekends
- Good to know. There are no peak periods during the autumn and spring months of April, May, September and October. Instead, the shoulder rates apply from 7am to 10pm weekdays and off-peak from 10pm to 7am at all other times.
Where you live (your distributor zone) and the type of metre you have at home determine the type of tariff you're on.
When you enter your address to compare energy plans, you could be presented with options that include one or more of the following types of tariffs:
- Time of use tariff. You will be charged different rates depending on when you're using your electricity – peak, off-peak or shoulder time.
- Single rate tariff. You will pay 1 rate regardless of when you're using energy. It's usually lower than rates charged during peak times and slightly higher than off-peak and shoulder rates.
- Demand tariff. This tariff is set by your energy distributor. It will use your highest power demand in a particular period and charge you that rate throughout.
- Controlled load tariff. This allows you to have your electricity usage for certain devices – such as heating systems and swimming pools – metered separately from the rest of your property.
