Best value car insurance: Budget Direct

Budget Direct car insurance
Best value car insurance 2023
5/5 ★★★★★

Why we chose Budget Direct:

Budget Direct is cheaper than almost all of its competitors but covers more than other budget brands. That's why it won our Best Value Finder Award in 2023.

  • It won the 2023 Finder Award for best value car insurance. Why? Budget Direct covers the same as other insurers but charges a lot less. The average comprehensive policy costs $1,004 per year, according to our research of 32 brands. That's cheaper than 27 others including NRMA, Allianz and QBE by at least $200 per year.
  • It's cheap but you actually get quite a lot for your money (damage to your own car, theft cover, severe weather cover, towing costs, new car replacement cover, a hire car if you're in a no-fault accident and more).
  • There are lots of ways to lower your costs further. For example, you can increase your excess, restrict drivers under a certain age and get a 15% online discount on your first year's premium.
  • It's not the cheapest policy on the market. If price is your sole concern, look elsewhere. Bingle tends to be around $200 per year less but won't cover you for as much.

Cheap car insurance with lots of features: Youi

Youi car insurance
Best car insurance features winner 2023
5/5 ★★★★★

What we like about Youi:

Youi is good if you want a competitively priced policy that covers a bit more than other insurers (such as roadside assistance).

  • Youi won the 2023 Finder Car Insurance Award for best features. It's the only car insurance provider out of 32 to automatically include roadside assistance with its comprehensive policy.
  • On average, a policy cost just over $1,100 per year when we collected 30+ quotes. Only 6 insurers were cheaper and none include roadside assistance.
  • On top of roadside assistance, you get accidental damage, theft, towing, new car replacement, baby seat replacement, personalised registration plate cover and more.
  • You typically need to chat with someone over the phone to get a policy, which may be off-putting for some people.

Cheapest car insurance: Bingle

Bingle car insurance logo
4.5/5 ★★★★★

What we like about Bingle:

Bingle is good if you want what is typically the cheapest comprehensive car insurance policy money can buy, according to our research. You may want to look elsewhere though if you want more than entry-level comprehensive cover.

  • Bingle offered the cheapest comprehensive car insurance out of all the providers included in our 2023 Awards.
  • It offers the standard inclusions you'd want with entry-level comprehensive cover. Bingle's policy covers damage to your vehicle, including after an accident, theft, fire or storm. It also covers accidental damage to other people's cars and property.
  • It's third party option is also typically one of the cheapest on the market if you want to downgrade from comprehensive cover.
  • Bingle is cheap because it covers you for the essentials and not much more. You'll have to pay extra if you want things such as hire car after an accident and new car replacement.
  • It's online-only. Some customers have complained about its poor customer service if you do need to make a claim.

Cheap car insurance for young drivers: ROLLiN'

Rollin' car insurance
5/5 ★★★★★

What we like about ROLLiN':

ROLLiN' is cheap for young drivers. It's good if you're in your 20s and you can cancel any time.

  • It's hard to beat on price. ROLLiN's comprehensive policy is typically the lowest-priced policy for 20-year-olds. It was $41 cheaper than Bingle, which was the second cheapest brand, according to our 2023 pricing research.
  • ROLLiN' won't hit you with an additional excess based on your age – you'll just pay $800 per named driver. This isn't standard. For example, Bingle charges an extra age excess of $600 if the driver is under 25 years old.
  • ROLLiN' offers agreed value cover, giving you more control when it comes to your payout if your car's written off.

Tips for finding cheap car insurance

  • Compare online. Loyalty doesn't pay with car insurance – the best value policy today might be more expensive when it renews next year. Shop around and you could save hundreds of dollars.
  • Restrict drivers. Choosing not to let drivers under 25 drive your car can lead to a premium saving.
  • Choose a higher excess. You'll have to pay more upfront to make a claim, but taking a higher excess will lower your regular premiums.
  • Pay annually. Some car insurers offer discounts if you're able to pay your annual premium upfront rather than in monthly instalments.
  • Keep your car in a garage. Your car is safer if it's kept in a garage or in an off-street parking spot, so your premium should be less.
  • Pay-as-you-go. If you don't use your car much, consider a pay-as-you-drive insurance policy. It can be a cheaper alternative if you drive fewer than 15,000km per year.

      Hi Leon,

Thank you for reaching out to Finder.

I’m afraid we may not be able to identify which of them offers the lowest rate as the insurance premium varies on the details that you will provide as you request for a quote. It may be good to click the Get Quote button above so you can start checking how each insurers charge based on your qualifications and the car that you own. There are also some deals available that you want to take advantage. You can click Get Deal for that.

      Hope this helps.

      Kind Regards,
      Mai
